Skill Building Projects

Project: 500 Cities: Exploring Health Outcomes Across America

Description: (September 2017) Completed a course with General Assembly Data Science Fundamentals using R. Final project used a dataset from from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 500 Cities: Local Data for Better Health Project to explore how to best target health care resources based on existing data as a classification problem involving prioritization, ranking, and targeting.

Project: Social Media Moderation with Sentiment Analysis

Description: (August 2016) Completed a course with Springboard Foundations of Data Science, a 100 hour intensive with R and data analytics. Final project used a Naïve Bayes classification model to perform sentiment analysis on over 1 million Reddit comments gathered with the Reddit API using rCurl, jsonlite, r.utils and DBI libraries and then used tm, e1071, gmodels, and pROC. Practice use case was a be classification that could be used to flag users for human review based on consistent negative or positive comments.

Project: Website – Mortality Rate

Description: (August 2007 – May 2008) Designed a system for calculating risk of death from various causes combining public data from both the United States CDC and European EuroStat, working with the Center for the Study & Improvement of Regulation. I focused on debugging, performance efforts, and database design, with significant time spent programming some primary functions and graphs, as well as documentation. Used ASP.NET, SQL Server, Adobe Flex Charting.
